Another great one from Josh. I was a National level powerlifting competitor in several federations in the late 90s/early 2000s. SInce about 2008, I've done very little training and almost nothing for the past several years. Recently, I got tired of being fat and weak. When you're used to being strong, being weak really sucks. After several starts and stops, I hooked up with one of my old training partners and I decided to just pick a routine and spend some time working. In about 20 weeks, I added 65 lbs to my bench, 70 to my squat and 95 to my deadlift. Granted some of this is sure to be muscle memory and my current lifts are far, far less than my old competitive numbers but for a 50+ year old guy, I am really pleased with the progress. The best part is I feel much better. I've had nagging pains from an old non-lifting related injury and for the first time in years my shoulders don't hurt when I bench. Next training cycle starts this weekend!
I've got several of Josh's books. You cant go wrong with the info he puts out.

Excellent reference book for strength and power athletes . I've had great success with Josh Bryant's coaching . I've used him for five years now and he's helped me to achieve lifetime bests at age fifty two following a serious knee injury.
I can't think of a better coach out there. Get this today and getting started making gains and smashing prs.
I thought the first volume was an awesome read but Josh Bryant has taken things to atmospheric levels with this one. This book is MUST READ material...filled with amazing workouts and rock solid strength, power, and nutrition information.  It holds great training knowledge and training secrets of many strength sport legends, one of the many highlights of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to take their workouts to uncharted levels. This literature does not disappoint. You will never get bored with your workouts again.... JOSH BRYANT IS TOP NOTCH.
So I read the new book as always your books are solid reads. I enjoyed the comprehensiveness of it. It was a book that could be a first read and never miss a beat, which I always appreciate as it opens the door for more people to enter the study. I also enjoyed that it included subjects, such as recovery and nutrition in some depth. As most of the books in the field either barley touch on the subjects or just avoid it all together. Also every time I read one of your books makes me feel like I do no work at all, as everything always seems a step ahead.
Josh Bryant writes an excellent book that combines 1) a through, entertaining history of the strength game, 2) an insightful and scientifically based discussion of the biological processes related to speed,strength, size, and 3) a common sense approach to getting bigger, stronger and faster. This is a must read for those interested in improving athletic performance. Josh has an excellent perspective on this subject since at one time he was one of strongest men in the world. Plus, his education and certification as a CSCS and his tutelage by the greats, including Fred Hatfield, give him the credibility that many do not have. You must read this book!
I had already picked up a copy of the original built to the hilt, which is another great book by the way, so I was very excited for a specific strength and power addition. I thought this book would be a companion piece to the original, but I was very wrong. Whereas I recommend picking up both titles, this book can stand completely on its own.

The book is easy to read and Josh lays out the important ground work for how and, more importantly, why one programs for a strength athlete. He gives insight into the scientific reasoning behind powerlifting principles as well as includes in his anecdotal advice via his personal experiences. You also get a succinct overview of some of the concepts expressed in a college level Exercise Physiology course. I read the book in a weekend and am now going back and highlighting key areas for quick reference.

If you do pick up both copies of Built to the Hilt, then you will notice a few redundancies in information. Personally, I appreciated these, because it only served to highlight the most important aspects of the text.

My own personal favorite takeaway from the two books is the inclusion of non-traditional exercises such as the dead bench. Josh Bryant and been advocating this movement for some time now, but I recently added it to my program. Holy crap! It is a game changer. I think this movement alone is going to help me blow past my 360 bench and clear my 400 pound goal.

Overall, I think this book is very well written and includes information invaluable to strength coaches and athletes alike. I would not hesitate to pick up a copy.
I now own, I think, everything Josh has written and have to say that Built to the Hilt, the Strength and Power edition is my favorite. I bought it yesterday and spend several hours reading it then and several more hours today. Couldn't put it down. An enormous amount of information. The chapter on Sports Psychology I ended up reading twice as it is full of interesting information one can apply right away. The chapter on the big 3, Squat, Bench and Deadlift is excellent, of course and I very much enjoyed the additional information about Strongman lifts and competition. There's a really good part on spotting techniques I wish every 'bro' in the gym would memorize. Josh touches on basic kinesiology, biomechanics and hypertrophy and adaptations to strength training. When you are done reading these chapters you feel like an expert, and you're not even half way through the book! The chapter about strength is worth double the price of the book. There are additional chapters on nutrition, hydration, explosive power, recovery and burnout and last, but not least, a boat load of routines. I really feel Josh pulled out all the stops on this one and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any novice and advanced trainee.
